While searching for some guzzlers for QUOC I have spotted mountain quail in the higher elevations, but like others have said the chapparal is thick. Your best bet may be along ridgelines where the brush may not be so thick.

However, between the brush and the slope, I wouldn't even send a dog in after a bird. I should clarify. Some of parts of these districts are a little more huntable than the OC part. Typically though, the NF is the steep brushy part right next to the lush bottomland that's either private or park. I think the landowners way back found they could sell the otherwise worthless parts of their land to the government.

Three does came within 40 feet, but the rest were too far to identify the sex. Unfortunately, I saw only one dove, and it was out of range. I wouldn't bother trying this location.

If I had more time, I'd like to try the areas adjacent to the Ortega Hwy. As far as the "no shoot" zones, these areas are closed to any shooting--hunting or plinking. How's the research regarding the area off the 91? Joined Mar 26, Messages 4, Reaction score I've seen signs that say no shooting, but that applies only to plinking.

I think the signs say something like. I may be mistaken, I haven't been up there due to the seasonal closures from the frog thingee. Cleveland is a tough hunt with a lot of long, hot dry walking and impenetrable brush off the trails in the lower elevations. Also, remember to get your mis Adventure Pass or you will get a parking ticket for parking in turnouts p-lots or even along the side of the road in the NF.

You can pick them up at local sporting goods stores and I think ranger stations Scott. Joined Jul 19, Messages 1, Reaction score 2. Buy the Adventure Pass at Big 5. Are you talking about the north side of the hwy behind the campground? There are some spots but it gets steep once you get back aways. There are also some improvements, dwellings, etc. There's the yard rule that says you have to be yards from any building, road or trail.

Draw that margin around all the trails, roads and buildings and it gets tight. Mountainbikers use the main trail there because its a downhill shot all the way to the fire station by Lazy W Ranch. I have seen a couple does and some quail around there, but always next to the road of course, that could be because I'm mostly just driving through. I scouted that area for deer and saw some sign, but nothing that excited me. Look for water, as there is currently very little of it.

I know a couple great spots, but they're about a mile walk in. If you can negotiate permission to trespass with a landowner, you could reduce the hike.

Remember the San Mateo Wilderness allows only hiking in. At times I've gotten the impression that certain Rangers not all don't want hunters.. Forests and grasslands may place some areas as off limits to hunting.

So check in with your local Forest Service ranger to be sure you are following all the rules. The Cleveland National Forest is open to hunting in the pursuit of birds and game according to the current season schedule and hunting regulations set by the California Department of Fish and Game. In addition to a hunting license, certain areas on the forest may require a Forest Adventure Pass. For additional information contact your local Forest Service office. A state hunting license is required for taking any bird or mammal.
